Blizzard shut down the Overwatch servers on Monday because Overwatch 2 is coming out on Tuesday. The new game is the long-awaited sequel to the hero shooter. It has a new battle pass system and 5v5 gameplay.
Overwatch 2 is a big change for the series. It was first announced at BlizzCon in 2019. The sequel is fully committed to a live-service, free-to-play model in which the game gets new content every season in the form of new heroes, new maps, and major balance patches. This model is Blizzard’s attempt to live up to what Overwatch was meant to be.
When will Overwatch 2 be released?
Overwatch 2 is set to come out in North America on Tuesday. It will be playable on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation Vita. The servers should be up and running at 3 p.m. ET (12 p.m. PT).
How to get the Overwatch 2 file
If you already have the first Overwatch game, you can get the second one as an update. It’s a big update (about 50 GB on PC and 30 GB on console), but it means you don’t have to download a new game. When the game comes out in your time zone, new people can download it.
All players, new and old, will need to turn on SMS protection on their Blizzard account. You can do this by logging into your Battle.net account, going to Account Details > Phone Number, and entering your phone number. If you click “Continue,” you’ll get a text message with a verification code. If you type in the code, your account will be checked. Blizzard has said that “certain types of phone numbers, such as pre-paid and VOIP, cannot be used for SMS Protect.” YouGov data shows that 38% of US adults between the ages of 18 and 29 have a prepaid plan. This means that they may be left out.
Is it free to play Overwatch 2?
You can get and play Overwatch 2 for free. You can buy the premium battle pass for season one for 1,000 credits, which costs $10. You can also use that same currency to buy cosmetics in the shop. If you bought the Watchpoint Pack, which is available on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, the premium battle pass will be unlocked for you, and you’ll get some legendary skins and 2,000 credits, which is enough for two more premium battle passes. If you don’t get new heroes in the battle pass where they first appear, you can buy them in the shop or get them through future challenges.
