Uncle Jack Charles, Indigenous actor dies aged 79

Artists from all over Australia have hailed Charles, who passed away after suffering a stroke, as a "genuine Australian legend." 

Uncle Jack Charles, an indigenous performer, musician, artist, and activist, passed away at the age of 79.

On Tuesday morning, his publicist announced that Charles had passed away at the Royal Melbourne Hospital after suffering a stroke.

The cherished Boon Wurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung, Woiwurrung, and Yorta Yorta seniors received a smoking ritual from family members at the hospital as a final farewell.

According to the statement, "We are so proud of everything he has accomplished in his remarkable life," as evidenced by his numerous awards,

, including this year's NAIDOC Male Elder of the Year. "He is an elder, actor, musician, potter, activist, mentor, a household name and voice loved by all,

the statement said. He will live on in our memories, in our hearts, and in the many plays and movies he was in.
