Omar Sy to Star in Netflix ‘Yasuke’ Event Series From 21 Laps, Significant Productions (Exclusive)

Nick Jones Jr., who served as the anime adaptation's main writer, will pen the five-part dramatisation of the real-life Black Samurai's tale.

Netflix is making a new version of Yasuke with the help of a number of familiar colleagues.

The Hollywood Reporter has learnt exclusively that Lupin star Omar Sy will portray the historical figure, an African man transported to feudal

Japan as a slave who became the country's first non-Japanese samurai, in a new live-action series. The five-part event series will be written by military veteran

-turned-screenwriter Nick Jones Jr., who penned the anime adaptation of Yasuke for the streaming service last year. "Since my time

as a Marine in Japan, it has been a lifelong ambition of mine to bring Yasuke's renowned true story to life," Jones said in a statement.

Jones and Sy will serve as executive producers alongside Shawn Levy and Josh Barry of 21 Laps and Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi of Significant Productions.
