John Lewis embroiled in ageism row over denying

John Lewis has been accused of "discriminating against the elderly and the weak" after turning down credit card applications from customers

who do not have a cell phone. On October 31, loyal customers will no longer be able to use their John Lewis Partnership Card if they

are not approved for the store's new card, which is being relaunched with credit provider NewDay.

For verification purposes, John Lewis requires customers to have a mobile phone in order to apply.

This is a problem for older cardholders who do not have a mobile phone. Since the card came out almost 20 years ago

many people have used it. Cynthia White, an 82-year-old woman from London, uses the Partnership Card for more than 90% of her purchases

When the store told her she couldn't get a new card, she was shocked. Dr. White has bad eyes and problems with his hands that make
