Hietaranta, Mueller Clinch Spot in Round of 8 at ITA Regionals
As the third day of the ITA Regional Championships at the Billingsley Tennis Center in Arkansas came to a close,
both Roni Hietaranta and Calvin Mueller moved on to the Round of 8. This is the second year in a row that the Huskers have sent a player to the Round of 8. Last year,
when the event was held at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center, William Gleason did the same thing.
After winning twice on Thursday and once on Friday, Mueller beat Carl Roothman of Oklahoma State 6-0, 6-1, to move on to tomorrow's Round of 8.
The man from Bruchkoebl, Germany, won his fourth singles match of the tournament to lead his team.
He will play Oklahoma State's Alejandro Garcia on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Hietaranta will join Mueller in the Round of 8 along with his 6-4, 5-7, and 7-6 wins over Drake's Jeremy Schifris (2). The Lappeenranta,
Finland native had a 22-win season with the Huskers a year ago. On Sunday at 12:30 p.m., he plays Nathan Han of the Oklahoma Sooners.
Nebraska has won 12 singles matches at this tournament, which is the most wins they've had in fall competition this year.
Every Husker who has played at least one match this season has won a singles match.
In the first round of doubles play, all three teams won, including two tie-breaker wins to start the day.
But all three teams came up just short in the second match, so the Huskers were taken out of the doubles draw.
