China says it discovered a new moon mineral

Last week, the Chinese Communist Party said that Chinese scientists had found a new mineral on the moon.

If it's true, China would be the third country to find a mineral on the moon. The mineral, called Changesite-(Y),

was found in lunar samples collected by China's Chang'e-5 mission in 2020, the South China Morning Post said on Friday.

Wang Xuejun, an official with the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), said that a team of researchers from the Beijing Research Institute of Uranium

Geology used X-ray diffraction and other high-tech methods to separate a single crystalline particle from moon rocks and dust.

Before China's Moon Festival, which takes place on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, the new moon mineral was announced.
