Washington's Langley A float plane crashed in Washington State's Puget Sound on Sunday
, leaving one person dead and nine others unaccounted for, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
On Sunday afternoon, the agency said through Twitter that the jet was travelling from Friday Harbor,
a well-liked tourist site in the San Juan Islands, to Renton, Washington. The Coast Guard had previously reported that
the aircraft was headed for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
About 40 miles (64 kilometres) northwest of Seattle, near Mutiny Bay off Whidbey Island, a collision took place.
Around Puget Sound, an entrance to the Pacific Ocean, float planes, or aircraft with pontoons that allow them to land on water, are a frequent sight.
Nine individuals are still missing, according to the Coast Guard, and one body has been found.
