UFC 279 fight card On Friday, Khamzat Chimaev missed weight by 7.5 pounds on Friday, which meant that Saturday’s lineup had to be completely changed.
UFC 279 fight card
On Friday night, UFC 279 got a makeover that will go down in history. Nate Diaz vs. Khamzat Chimaev was supposed to be the main event, but Chimaev missed weight by 7.5 pounds, so the fight won’t happen. Dana White, the president of the UFC, said late Friday that Tony Ferguson will now face Nate Diaz in the main event, which is also set for five rounds. Ferguson was supposed to fight Li Jingliang, which has caused a lot of changes to the main card at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where the fights will take place.
White also said that Chimaev will now fight Kevin Holland at a catchweight of 180 pounds, and Jingliang will fight Daniel Rodriguez, who was supposed to fight Holland, also at a catchweight of 180 pounds.
Diaz and Ferguson both made welterweight, which made it possible for them to fight each other after Diaz was said to have said he wouldn’t fight someone who missed weight. The two veterans made their names as lightweights, but in their last few fights, they have had trouble. Ferguson was going up to 170 pounds because he had lost his last four fights at lightweight. On the other hand, Diaz has fought at 170 pounds in his last five fights, which started in 2016. In those five fights, he has a 2-3 record.

In an interview with ESPN, White said, “It’s been a hell of a night and a hell of a morning.” “It’s not a coincidence that we put guys of the same weight on the same card in case something goes wrong, but yeah, it worked out.”
“When something like this happens, it’s clear that there are guys who trained for a long time for someone else. Sometimes it’s hard to get these guys to agree to different fights, but we did it, and they’re all set.”
Holland was supposed to fight at a catchweight of 180 pounds, which was close to Chimaev’s weight. Li weighed in at 171 pounds for his welterweight fight, and Rodriguez weighed in at 179 pounds for his catchweight fight.
The Chimaev-Holland fight
The Chimaev-Holland fight has a lot of heat behind it. According to reports, the two fighters and their camps got into a physical fight on Thursday, which caused the UFC 279 pre-fight press conference to be canceled. Chima and Holland had been insulting each other for months leading up to the fight on Saturday.
One of the main stories leading up to UFC 279 was that White and the company were giving Diaz to Chimaev to get the veteran out of the promotion. Diaz, a cult hero, has publicly and repeatedly asked to get out of his UFC contract. Chiam was on his way to becoming a superstar before he missed weight.
