A resolution made public on Tuesday moves Grammy-winning singer Shakira one step closer to being tried in Spain for alleged tax fraud against the Public Treasury of Spain.
A judge in Barcelona said that the case should go to trial, but there is no date set yet. Spanish prosecutors say that Shakira didn’t pay her personal income and wealth tax from 2012 to 2014, which is worth about $15.8 million right now. She has denied this.
In an interview with Elle magazine earlier this month, Shakira called her accusations “false.” She said, “I paid everything they said I owed, even before they filed a lawsuit. So as of right now, I owe them nothing. “
The Spanish government says she spent more than 183 days a year in Spain from 2011 to 2014, but Shakira denied that in an interview with Elle. Her lawyers have said that she lived mostly in the Bahamas during that time.
Shakira and her team believe that this case is a complete violation of her rights because she has always been a model citizen and taxpayer and has always been willing to settle any disagreement from the start, even before the criminal process,” a spokesperson for Shakira said in a statement in July, when a settlement could not be reached.
CNN has reached out to people who work for Shakira to get more information. If she is found guilty, prosecutors want her to spend eight years in prison and pay fines.
