As a lot of people are sad about the death of the Queen, Meghan Markle and Camilla Parker Bowles are once again being harassed and spreading false information online.
During the live broadcast of the Queen’s funeral on Monday, millions of people watched TikTok videos that made fun of Meghan. Another set of videos criticized Meghan’s funeral outfit and said she copied an old outfit Princess Diana wore. The video, which has been watched more than 22.5 million times, was made before the funeral and used photos from Remembrance Day in 2019.
For the Gen Z users who primarily use TikTok, fictional portrayals such as “The Crown,” which depicted the affair and led to new online harassment of Camilla, and TikToks about the royals make the Queen Consort even more despised.
Engagement-based algorithms tend to spread polarising videos instead of taking them down, and online abuse and false information tend to spread at an alarming rate, whether it’s false information about Meghan’s funeral dress or the conspiracy theory that the Queen died because of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Hundreds of thousands of people have watched slideshows of Camilla with the words “the new queen” or “his wife” next to photos of Diana with the words “the real queen” and “his ex-wife” next to them. The hashtag “Cowmilla,” which refers to the Queen Consort, has been used in videos that are both mean to Camilla and only mean to Meghan.
The Sussexes stopped using social media in January 2021 because they were being bullied. In an interview with The Cut that came out last month, Meghan was called “ready for her next act” and a return to Instagram was hinted at.
Since her relationship with Prince Harry became public in 2016, Meghan has been a target of online abuse and a mainstay of British tabloids. In January 2020, the couple announced that they would “step back as’ senior members of the British royal family.” In October of that year, Meghan went on the podcast “Teenager Therapy” and said that online bullying was “almost impossible to survive.”
“I’ve been told that in 2019, I was the most trolled person in the whole world, male or female,” Meghan said. She added that she hadn’t even been “visible” for eight months of the year because she was on maternity leave. The 41-year-old former actor is a popular target for trolls right now, but this new wave of online harassment against Camilla, who is 75, is just old hate speech that young people can see again.
In the 1990s, many people blamed Camilla for the breakup of Diana’s marriage to Charles, who is now the king.
In an April interview with The Washington Post, Tina Brown, the author of “The Palace Papers,” said, “It’s almost incomprehensible how much abuse Camilla took.” I mean, people called her a hag, an old bag, and a witch. I mean, people have said things like this about Camilla for years. “
Brown went on to say that after Diana’s death in 1997, people’s negative feelings about Camilla got even worse.
She said Camilla was “thought of as the kind of ugly force that had driven Diana into such pain and sadness because of Charles’s love for her.”
In her famous 1995 interview with journalist Martin Bashir, Diana called Camilla the “third person” in her marriage. Camilla was called “the most hated woman in Britain” by the British media.
