Margot Robbie, who plays Barbie and is also a producer, said she was “mortified” by the viral set photos of her and Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken, in costume. Robbie talked about the leaked set photos on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” where he was promoting David O. Russell’s movie “Amsterdam.”
“By the way, I can’t tell you how ashamed we were,” Robbie said. “We look like we’re having fun and laughing, but we’re dying inside.” Dying. I thought, “This is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to me.”
Jimmy Fallon asked Robbie if she knew that when the “Barbie” photos came out, they would be analyzed all over the internet.
“No!” Robbie said. Well, I knew we had to shoot some scenes outside in L.A. I knew, OK, once you started going outside, you’d be photographed. There will probably be a small group of people who stand out because, well, you know, we do, too, in those outfits. So I knew there would be a little bit of attention and maybe some photos would get out, but not as much as there were. It was like madness. It seemed like a lot of people were watching.
Greta Gerwig wrote and directed “Barbie,” which is about Robbie’s Barbie doll leaving Barbieland and going into the real world. Along with the photos taken by paparazzi that got out, a recording was made of Gosling as Ken screaming when Barbie punches a man who grabs her behind while she’s rollerblading. Costume designer Jacqueline Durran, who won an Oscar, made the ’90s neon outfits that were all over the internet.
After working together on the costumes for “Little Women,” for which Durran won her second Academy Award (her first was for “Anna Karenina” in 2012), she joined forces with Gerwig again.
And while Robbie was “dying” inside during the highly publicized filming, co-star Gosling hinted that his character Ken was taking that pain very literally: In short, Ken is having trouble. It turns out that the Barbie Dream World isn’t all fun and games.
Gosling once told Entertainment Tonight while promoting his Netflix spy caper, “That Ken’s life is even harder than the ‘Gray Man’ life.” Ken doesn’t have any money, a job, a car, or a place to live. He’s having some problems. “
Don’t think, though, that you know anything about “Barbie.” Gosling, who was always a mystery, said, “It’s not what you think it is unless it is.” “Then you’ll know what it is, but I don’t think you think that’s what it is. What are we talking about? “
The making of “Barbie” ended in July 2022, and the movie is set to come out in July 2023.
