Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson is going to have to make a big and hard choice. In a new clip from the next episode of Mama June: Road to Redemption, shared exclusively with ET, Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson’s dad is asked to sign over custody of the teen.
Fans can see Joshua Efird, who is married to Lauryn “Pumpkin” Shannon, meet with Sugar Bear to get him to sign the legal papers.
“If all you’ve been thinking about is what’s best for Alana,” Joshua tells him, “then we have to sign some papers.”
He says, “This is kind of for us to get Alana away from Mama June and have her live with us.”
Joshua makes it clear that he is not coming at Sugar Bear “with a dagger.” He just wants to be able to take care of Lauryn’s sister in a legal way.
“I just want to be able to take care of Alana as I have been,” he tells Sugar Bear, adding that this would include paying for her medical bills and going to college.
But it’s clear that Sugar Bear is having a hard time with the situation, and he says it will be hard for him to sign. He said that it feels like he’s “basically signing her out of my life.”
What Sugar Bear is going through
Joshua can understand what Sugar Bear is going through because he and Lauryn also have kids. In a confessional, he says, “As a father, I could never, ever, ever imagine having to sign away my rights to my child, especially to someone else.” In this case, though, he knows she is safe where she is. He also knows that Alana would rather live with us than with her parents.
Fans will have to watch to find out if Sugar Bear agrees in the end. In the clip, he wipes away his tears and tells Joshua, “Right now, she’s the only thing I have.”
But based on what Alana said to ET recently, it doesn’t seem like his daughter cares much about him.
She said, “My dad has always been the one to get emotional about things he likes, like me and stuff, but it’s not a real emotion.” All of this is just a show. He just wants people to pity him. “
Where do things stand between them now? “Alana said, “He tries to blow up my phone all the time, all the time, all the time, but I never text back because, like, you’ve waited this long to just be in my life?” Like, I’m going to be 17 and you haven’t even tried yet? “
Mama June: Road to Redemption airs on WETV every Friday at 9 p.m.
