Five people were killed and two others were hurt in a mass shooting in Raleigh, North Carolina. The husband of one of the people who died said that his wife of five years was a “go-getter” and a caring person who always “looked out for” others. Nicole Connors, 52, was a “caregiver” who quit her job in human resources when her mother had a stroke and took care of her until she died a few years ago, her husband Tracey Howard told NBC News on Friday morning.
Howard said with emotion in his voice that she had always been able to help her family by “taking charge of everything.” Howard, 57, said that his wife always made sure he “took care of himself” and went to his doctor’s appointments. He said, “I’ve always thought I’d die before she did.”
Connors also loved and took care of the couple’s dog, Sami, who was a Jack Russell mix and died at the same time as Connors.
Husband of Raleigh shooting
If she had lived and found out that the dog had died, I think she would have died,” he said.
The shooting happened northeast of downtown Raleigh in a neighborhood. Because of the shooting, people were told to stay inside. Roy Cooper, the governor of North Carolina, called the shooting spree “every community’s worst nightmare.” Officials said that a 15-year-old boy was taken into custody after a “long standoff” with police. Patterson said that the people who died ranged in age from 16 to 52.
They were named Connors, Susan Karnatz, 49; Mary Marshall, 35; off-duty Raleigh police officer Gabriel Torres, 29, who was on his way to work; and a white 16-year-old boy. In addition to the person who died, the shooting also hurt Marcille Gardner, 59, who is still in critical condition, and Raleigh Police Officer Casey Clark, 33, who was treated and has since been released from the hospital.
