Here’s what’s open (and closed) on Columbus Day 2022

Columbus Day is not a very important holiday. Most stores stay open, and few places of business give their employees the day off. But it’s not a holiday that’s free of problems.
Technically, Columbus Day (or, for some, Indigenous Peoples Day) is a federal holiday. This means that if you plan to go to the bank or a government office, your plans may change.
Here’s a look at who will be open and who will be closed on Columbus Day in 2022, as well as some of the arguments about the holiday.

What’s Columbus Day about?

Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October to mark the date that Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas, which was October 12, 1492. Beginning in 1971, it was made a federal holiday.
Columbus is known for leading the way for Europeans to move to North America, but history has shown that he was less of a hero and more of a villain. He hurt Native Americans and brought disease, wars, and other bad things to the land that would become the United States.
In 1992, when people realized this, the day was given a new name that meant something: Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Instead of focusing on Columbus, the day honors and celebrates the Native American peoples and their histories and cultures. It is not a federal holiday, but it is a holiday in 10 states and dozens of cities. The federal government does not recognize Columbus Day. Last year, President Joe Biden was the first U.S. president to issue a proclamation for Indigenous Peoples’ Day. He said that on this day, the country “celebrates the invaluable contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples, recognizes their inherent sovereignty, and commits to honoring the Federal Government’s trust and treaty obligations to Tribal Nations.”

Are banks open on Columbus Day?

Not at all. Since it is a federal holiday, most banks will be closed on Columbus Day. American National Bank is one bank that does not close its branches. Of course, ATMs will still be there, of course, if you need cash or want to make a deposit.

Will anyone be delivering mail on Columbus Day?

The U.S. Postal Service is taking the day off, but UPS and FedEx will deliver packages for all divisions as usual. Also, all of their drop-off spots will be open at regular times.

Is there trading on the stock market on Columbus Day?

Yes. The bond market, the New York Stock Exchange, and the Nasdaq are all open and trading. Thanksgiving is the next holiday planned for the markets.

Does the government work on Columbus Day?

Federal offices will be closed, but things get a little less clear at the city, state, and county levels. For example, the offices in the city of Chicago are closed, but those in Delaware will be open. (This is not an official holiday in the state.) Indigenous Peoples’ Day is also not a paid holiday in many states that celebrate it.

Which stores and grocery stores are closed on Columbus Day?

Pretty much none. It’s possible that some small businesses will close, but that’s more likely to be because they can’t find enough people to work there. No big stores close for this holiday, and most people don’t even notice it because it’s so controversial.

Why is Columbus Day such a big deal?

Christopher Columbus is known for letting Europeans settle in the Americas, but in recent years, it has become more common knowledge that he was less of a hero and more of a villain. His cruel treatment of Native Americans is well known, and he brought disease, wars, and other things to North America. Historians know that Columbus made many natives of the West Indies his slaves. On the first day he set foot on land in 1492, he grabbed six of them and made them work for him. They were sent in the thousands to Spain to be sold. And some people were forced to go into mines to look for gold. When he arrived, there were 250,000 Taino people living there, but only a few hundred remained 60 years later.

So why is Columbus Day still celebrated?

A lot of Italian-Americans are proud of their heritage on this day. This year, the biggest celebration of Columbus Day in the United States will take place on Fifth Avenue in New York City. It will be the 78th annual Columbus Day parade. Another will be held in Brooklyn and will be celebrating its 40th year.
