GoldenEye 007 remaster has been announced for Xbox

The remaster is coming to Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, but there is one strange thing that won’t be included. Microsoft has confirmed that GoldenEye 007 will not have online multiplayer on Xbox.

What’s important to know

Today’s Nintendo Direct, it was confirmed that the rumored GoldenEye 007 remaster will come out. Rare said on Twitter that it will be available as part of Rare Replay on Xbox Game Pass.
For the Xbox release, the remaster will have better graphics and split-screen local multiplayer, but there will be no online multiplayer.

Rare has finally confirmed that a GoldenEye 007 remaster is coming, after months of rumors and a leaked list of achievements. The official trailer for the long-awaited release was shown on today’s Nintendo Direct. Then, Xbox studio Rare confirmed on Twitter that the game would also be available on Xbox Game Pass. But the tweet doesn’t say that the Xbox version won’t have online multiplayer, which has already been confirmed for the Nintendo Switch version.

The Xbox version of the remaster will have better graphics, a faster frame rate, and a native 16:9 4K resolution. Local split-screen multiplayer for up to four players will also be available, but so far, only online multiplayer for the Nintendo version has been announced. Online multiplayer is a system-level feature of the Nintendo Switch. Virtualized emulation lets any classic N64 game with local multiplayer features work online.

GoldenEye 007 remaster

There hasn’t been a confirmed release date yet, but this news comes 25 years after the first movie came out. Fans will be happy to hear that all the rumors from the past few months were true. The fact that the online multiplayer will only work on the Nintendo Switch has made the announcement less exciting. Adding virtualized online multiplayer features to old Xbox games would require more work on the Xbox backward compatibility system, which has been put on hold for now.

Given that Microsoft and Nintendo have different rights to the GoldenEye 007 video game IP, porting the game to modern systems probably wasn’t easy. Even though Nintendo is a competitor in the console market, Phil Spencer has said that he has “a tonne of respect” for them. Since Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie came out on Nintendo Switch Online this year, this is one of a number of recent projects that the two studios have worked on together.

GoldenEye007 will be available right away on Xbox Game Pass, and owners of the Rare Replay collection of games will get a free copy.

A representative from Microsoft told us that the Xbox version of the remastered GoldenEye 007 game will not have online play.

“Xbox is excited to bring GoldenEye 007 to Xbox Game Pass for the first time. It’s a faithful recreation of a much-loved and iconic title. While there are no plans to add online multiplayer to GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Game Pass, Xbox is focused on bringing this title to players the way they remember it, including a local multiplayer mode that lets up to four players battle it out on the couch using their wits and skills,” a spokesperson said.
