Antarctic virtual reality coming to Katikati

The Antarctic Heritage Trust will bring its popular virtual reality roadshow to Katikati’s Digital Hub during the school holidays in October. What could be more awesome?

From Tuesday, October 11, to Thursday, October 13, the Hillary’s Hut Antarctica Virtual Reality (VR) Experience will be at The Centre-Ptuki Manawa’s Digital Hub. This is a large-scale digital project that takes people to Antarctica in a way that has never been done before. You can use VR to step inside Sir Edmund Hillary’s hut, learn what it takes to be an Antarctic explorer, and see what life was like in 1957 in the coldest place on Earth.

This free event will only happen for three days, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is best for people over the age of nine. There are only a certain number of spots available, so you need to book in advance. Go to Eventbrite. co.NZ to book your session. Julia Edgecombe, who is in charge of the Council’s Libraries Western Team, says it’s exciting to be a part of the nationwide roadshow and bring Antarctica to Katikati.

Julia says, “This is a great chance for young people and their families in Western Bay to come and learn about Sir Edmund Hillary and New Zealand’s first presence in Antarctica in a fun, interactive, and fully immersive way.”To celebrate this awesome event coming to the Western Bay, our library teams around the District will put on some fun activities for kids during the October school holidays.”

“We’ll be going all out with the Antarctic theme, with crafts, coloring contests, movies, LEGO┬«, and cool activity booklets, so keep an eye on the Western Bay Libraries Facebook page to find out more!”

After getting $400,000 from the Provincial Growth Fund

After getting $400,000 from the Provincial Growth Fund, the Katikati Digital Hub opened in 2020. Its goal is to give people in Katikati and the nearby areas access to the digital tools and technologies they need to use digital tools and learn new skills.

Because the Hub has all the latest digital technologies, meeting rooms, and resources, we can host amazing events like the Antarctic Experience right here in Katikati. We can also help people in the area connect to the internet every day.

Julia says, “We’re really proud of our Digital Hub, and we’re lucky to be able to give our community such a great space.”
