2022 Amazon Fire 8 HD tablet sports a 30 percent faster CPU

Every two years, Amazon makes changes to its 8-inch tablets.
Amazon is making a new Fire HD 8 tablet for 2022, two years after the last one. Amazon says that the new model is “faster, lighter, and has a battery that lasts all day.” As usual, the price is very low: $99.99 for the Fire 8 HD and $119.99 for the Fire 8 HD Plus, which has better features. Before the launch, Amazon didn’t give out a full specs sheet, but you should be able to find more information on the Amazon Developer site.

What we do know is this. Amazon says that the 2020 Fire 8 has some kind of eight-core SoC (probably a Mediatek), which is “30 percent faster” than the MT8168. The base model comes with 2GB of RAM, either 32GB or 64GB of storage, and a slot for a MicroSD card. Amazon says the battery will last “13 hours,” but the old Fire 8 HD, which had a 4,850 mAh battery, had the same number of hours. A low-end 5 W USB-C power adapter takes five hours to charge the tablet.

For $20 more, the “Plus” model raises the bar a bit. You get 3GB of RAM, wireless charging, a huge 9 W USB-C charger, and a better 5MP rear camera that takes “sharper” pictures. The wireless charging dock keeps the tablet standing up and turns it into an Alexa smart display, just like an Echo Show. The Fire 8 Plus looks the same as the regular Fire 8 from the outside. There are also versions for children.

Amazon says that the Fire HD 8 Kids is “made for kids ages 3–7” because of its very thick, permanently attached case. The Fire HD 8 Kids Pro, on the other hand, is “made for school-aged kids ages 6–12” and has a slightly less thick body. The kids’ versions have controls for parents, kickstands, an Amazon Kids+ subscription for a year, and educational content. You’ll have to pay more for that. Kids’ tablets start at $149.99, and ones with the Disney brand cost $10 more.
